I think most people named Chris that I've encountered have been men, with it being a shortened form of Christopher, Christian, or Cristobal (he went by Cris, actually). That said, I've encountered women named Christine / Christina who went by Chris, as well as one woman whose given name was Kris. It's fine as a nickname, and not uncommon. It's odd to encounter it as a given name.

My sister Christina prefers to go by Chris. She's one of only 2 women I know that go by it. It's very largely a male nickname I find. Would be surprised to come in contact with it as a stand-alone. Not very pretty on a girl imo. My brother-in-law doesn't like the nickname either I think because he only ever calls her Christina.

I don’t think it’s bad, and maybe the kid will suit it (I hope, anyways).

I think for me Chris (m or f) is the most unremarkable name I can think of. But on a child, I agree, it would seem a bit odd.
