I posted about Carole way back in 2009(!) and am experiencing a resurgence of enthusiasm for it after watching Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be, which features Carole Lombard's final performance before her untimely death. She's exquisite in it, so now the name has an Old Hollywood luster in my mind (I'm ashamed to say I had never experienced a Carole Lombard performance before this!). I also love its no-nonsense sleekness. What do you think? Carol appeals to me much less, though I'm pronouncing the two identically.

This name is pretty good. I keep trying to say it like ca-rolle though.

I know this is dumb, because they don't sound alike, but the e spelling reminds me strongly of casserole. Whereas Carol looks like a holiday song or a short form of Caroline.
The bottom 7 combos are my favorites, particularly Zinnia and Sabine.

Carol and Carole are pronounced identically, you're right. So, why stick an unnecessary -e on to the end of Carol? To make it feminine? Then why not the admittedly awful Carola? I see Carol as no-nonsense all right, and a lot of your combos include names I like. Carol Penelope would be lovely, for instance, but Carole (with a silent -e) Penelope (where the -e is sounded) doesn't work for me.
I don't know if vintage BBC radio comedy has a following in the USA: if it does, then consider The Glums. In one episode, Mr Glum is sounding off about female names he finds absurd and his final, climactic example is Carole, but he scornfully pronounces it Car 'Ole. I rest my case.

I totally understand your reaction. I'm just taken with Carole Lombard at the moment, so that spelling's appeal is intimately tied up with her appeal. It's a bit more glamorous to me.

I hadn't heard of her - not a movies person - but it seems her stage name was Carol at first, and then she changed it to Carole. Clearly, she would have agreed with you about the glamour!

It's the name is a very good friend. Her middle name is Angela. She's in her 30s. Her dad is a music teacher. It's also the name of my aunt.
Despite this it's my least favorite name of that time period. Karen (why did it have to be ruined? (, Susan, Jean, Judith, Linda - all are favorites. But Carol annoys me. I knew a few growing up that really bugged me, I suspect that's why.
I do see if coming back, though.
If I were to use it I'd go for Carole Lillian.

It has some Hollywood glamour attached to it too, via Burnett and Channing. I don't like the e on the end because it just seems unnecessary and misleading.
Carol makes a pretty middle name too, especially for a Xmas-time baby.
