I don't like it. It has the feel of a bloke of my parent's era who went by "Gav" who may or may not have dealt drugs, but certainly whose favourite hobby was a pub crawl. He smokes. It also sounds like an older chav name, complete with the tracksuit. "Gav," has that hard, simple quality to it. It's not a friendly sounding name to me.

I think its simply because of real-life association and stereotyping.

I loved it enough to use it for my son.
I like the sound, I like that it’s a wee bit uncommon, without being WEIRD. It’s easy to spell, easy to pronounce, and goes with multiple middle names.
Also, we are big nicknamers, so “Gav” is a very quick and unoffensive nickname.
I have literally met maybe 3 other Gavins, in my entire life, so I kind of like that as well. I’m not the mom that wants my kids to be Gahvynne, or King Cyrus Poseidon, or Herman Harold Jr, but I do like having names that aren’t super common.

A random funny fact: Gavins’ twin, also has a fairly normal but not exactly common name. As a matter of fact, I had never met another one, only heard the name in a story I listened to while I was pregnant. Whilst at a small homeschool co-op a few years ago, I heard a mother call her child… only, I thought she was calling mine, because she called his exact name. So I wandered over to her and asked her-“is that your sons name?” She kind of looked at me like I’m a weirdo, and was like “yessss?”
So, yeah. Never met another child (or person at all) with the name, and when we do? He has the exact same first and middle name. Super odd coincidence.

I like Gavin, but as G names go, I prefer Gareth and Graham. I've heard it pronounced GAYvin by Americans, but I do hope most of them don't.

In my opinion, its overrated.

I've never liked the sound of it. It's just grating to me. I first heard it on a soap opera character, back in the 80s. Along with Logan, which I don't like the sound of either.
I do think Gavin is better than Logan.
I get a sort of mountain-man vibe from Gavin. It seems very masculine.
Thinking about it is making me dislike it less...
