Lovely for a girl with ebony skin.

I knew (of) an Ebony. She lived in a small village I visited frequently. A middle-class mother living in a beautiful detached cottage. I remember playing with her dogs. The name took me surprise at first, never having heard it before, but I think it has a really sound to it.

I know this name seems kind of heavy and intense, but think it's actually quite cute and sweet. My accent turns it into "Ebbanie" which is adorable. I've never met an Ebony, but I'd love to. I've met an Ivory, but never an Ebony.

I agree! The name is sweet. The only Ebony I knew was a toddler then.

I just hear Paul Macartney. Always a pleasure, a fine song with a noble message, so far so good. But - wood? Really? And it contains 'bony', which isn't very attractive either.

I think it's a beautiful name. However, here in the US it is considered a "black name" and is virtually never used on white girls. It's also fairly dated, as a lot of those names tend to date quickly.

It's a black wood, after all! As a matter of interest, is Ivory ever used as a name, and if so, is it limited to white girls? I've never seen either of them used in South Africa.

Usually for girls, apparently. The only one I knew was a black guy. It's also a not-that-rare last name, sometimes also spelled Ivery. I think the guy I knew might have been Ivery.
Also, in the US it's a soap.

I think that Ebony is a wonderful name, though I probably wouldn’t use it.
