[Opinions] Thoughts on the name Lucky for a girl?
There's names that mean luck such as Fortuna, Chance, Felicity etc. but what about Lucky? What are your thoughts?

The main female character from the Dreamworks Animated movie Spirit is Fortuna nicknamed Lucky so it automatically makes me think of that. I think it could be a quirky nickname alternative to Lucy.

If so-called “luck” is hereditary, I think that any child (bore under my genes) named Lucky would be so unfortunate, lmao. If it were a different name, meaning “lucky,” I wouldn’t have this opinion; it’s just too much of a societal word. As a nickname, I think that Lucky would be pretty cool! Also, it reminds me of Lucky (from a favorite childhood show), a character in “Pound Puppies;” that’s a positive association for me.

it's a dog's name ...And not a very original one.

That’s what I was thinking.

I don't think it's a namey concept. I mean, luck and fortune are notoriously perverse and arbitrary - and also resistant to being appeased by superstitious actions, like naming a kid after them. Lotto numbers might be "lucky," but not entire people. You've given me yet another reason to hate the name Felicity. thanks

I can’t picture Lucky on a human at all. Sounds like a pet name.

It's OK, could maybe be a nn for feminine 'Luc-' names, like Lucille and such. I'm probably influenced by the teen girl character 'Lucky' in "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" in this, though.

I feel like it's a name for a horse or a dog, not really a human name

Not really my thing as a full name, and I would assume it was a nickname if I heard it in real life (which I haven't yet). It does kinda sound like a dated dog name (or maybe it's still popular?). I prefer Felicity and Fortuna as full names with nn Lucky. Chance doesn't really seem feminine to me, but it is also not overly masculine.

I think it's kind of cool/charming though riskier than Hope or Sunny. I've only seen it used as a NN for Lakshmi. Or as a guy name (Lucky Blue Smith and also a minor character in Star Wars). It does seem likely to be a pet name to me but not moreso than Daisy or Clover or Chance, whatever that tells you.

I think people would say she’s so lucky, she’s a star, but she cry cry cries in her lonely heart thinking if there’s nothing missing in my life then why do these tears come at night?

This is not a real person's name. This is the doomed bombadier in the war movie, the litte dog who never gets adopted, the hood from the wrong side of the tracks, not a real child, certainly not a girl who has to live in the real world.

Actually, it was given to 83 babies in the US in 2021, some of whom were girls. For context, that's about: more than Prosper, Fortuna, and Cherry combined; the same as Lark and Lilac combined; 10 uses less than Primrose and 10 uses more than Prudence; half as much as Honesty or Cherish or Karma; twice as much as Freedom; more than twice as much as Enid; nearly 3x as much as Peregrine; 4x as much as Lakshmi; more than 4x as much as Starling or Deirdre...if you only count the feminine uses, it was given about as often as Deirdre in 2021 or about as often as Peregrine was used as masculine.

You missed the point entirely.

I didn't. I thought it wasn't a good point.Plus I was actually curious about its use, so I compared it to some random names in case anyone else is curious.

Makes me think of the Jackie Collins novels immediately, and her heroine named Lucky. As someone who is very UNlucky, I wouldn't want this to be my legal name. At least options like Felicity and Fortuna are a bit less obvious. And Chance is kind of open-ended so there's not as much pressure. Lucky would be a cute nickname though. Maybe it could be one of those nicknames that don't have to refer directly to the legal name, so you could use it for anything, too.

Don't like it at all

The only Lucky I've known was a boy. Not academically inclined, but a delightful person who kept on good terms with both sides of his divided family. He went out one night to help elderly neighbours, and the driver of a stolen car crashed into him and drove on. He died instantly. One of the saddest funerals I've ever attended, and the irony of his name made it worse.

I had a pet rabbit with this name growing up, so I think it's really more of an animal's name. It's not terrible as a given name, but I would assume it to be a diminutive.
