Both DH and DW's families immigrated to the US just before the Immigration Act of 1924, DH being from Italy, and DW being from Poland. Both of their families settled in Chicago, where DH and DW met in school. The two of them were in the same class, and learned English together. However, DH had to drop out of school at age 12 to go work for his family, but DW came from a wealthier family, and she was able to graduate high school and then go on to nursing school to become a nurse. The two met again after DH opened a drapery business down the street from where DW lived. They got married at age 20, right after the Great Depression had begun. Although DW lost her job, she was able to find odd jobs until she could secure another position, and DH's business was just barely able to stay afloat. In 1940 DH was drafted for WW2, but made it home safe other than partial hearing loss in both his ears. By 1946 the couple had 4 children, two boys, and two girls.
