I used to not like either name. Evangeline sounded too serious and more dramatic than other names that I liked better. Eva sounded rough, and I usually prefer gentler sounds. I like Evangeline now because it is pretty and dramatic in a good way. Even so, it seems a bit too religious for me to use, and I still do not care much for Eva. However, I don't think Eva or Eve is overly religious. Both names are common enough to have lost whatever "overbearing" biblical quality that they had. Although Evangeline is popular right now, I cannot say from my own experience that it is common, so that is something else to like about the name.
