To my surprise, in a distant branch of my family tree, a working-class family on Tyneside named one of their sons Campbell - this in the 1870s. His sister and her husband, also a Geordie, emigrated to South Africa and had five sons, one of whom was also named Campbell. I've got no idea why! If I had to choose, I'd prefer Cameron; a man with the surname Campbell has married into another family branch and I don't enjoy his company at all.
