It's a handsome name, and most certainly Albert can stay as Albert instead of "Al"!

Al would be the obvious nickname. But people can insist on going by their full name and not having a nickname. Albert is alright.

I knew a kid named Albert who was never called Al (at least that I’m aware of), so it’s possible. I like it as a middle name.

I think the most common nickname for Albert these days is Albie. I don’t mind Albert.
