Help[Surname] Excellent source on surnames used in Germany (not only German ones)
I came across a site with more than 74k surnames used in Germany (not only German ones, but also from neighbouring countries and countries with recent immigration to Germany) here:

The List is scientifically curated, but all explanations are in German language (no English version as far as I can see, clicking on "English" only switches navigation, but not the articles on names). Every single name gets a suggested quotation (good for the notes section of a family name) with an URL.
