[Opinions] Ed as a nickname for a girl
Watching an episode of Midsomer Murders on tv. There are two sisters in the episode Sophie and Ed. We never find out what Ed is short for. What longer name would you give Ed and if you had to give a daughter either a masculine or unisex nickname what would you use?Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from

Replies

I don't like Ed for a girl. I do like Edna, Edwina, and Edith. I don't really like boys names on girls, even as nicknames.
I know an Eddy, named Edyta.I prefer Edyta to Edna or Edwina, so would pick that.Edith would surely by Edie, not Eddy.
(Writing this as I watch an episode of Misomer Murders myself)The first "long form" for Ed I thought of was Edith. I also like the Edna and Edwina mentions. If I had to give my daughter a masculine/unisex nickname, I'd probably go with Charlie (Charlotte) or Frankie (Frances). Fits the masculine-or-unisex vibe while being common enough that it wouldn't seem strange on a girl.
I would pick Theodora as a full name for Ed and would pick Ollie as a nickname for Olwen.
Holly Hunter plays "Ed" in the movie Raising Arizona. The character's real name is Edwina.
If I had to call someone Ed, I'd go with Edith as the full name. But Edie is a far better nickname for Edith. If I had to use Edwina, which is growing on me, her nickname would be Winnie.
Ed makes me think of an old man, which is why I don't particularly find it cutesy or endearing on a little girl. (It'll be like naming a daughter Frank, Bob, Hank, Lloyd and so forth)
That aside if I absolutely had to: Edwarda, I guess. If I absolutely had to. I don't care for Edna or especially Edwina.
Ed is too bland, regardless of it as a given name or a nickname, but I'd go with Edelweiss or Edera. As for the nicknames, I thought of Vinnie for Lavinia or Thad for Thaddea.
I don't like Ed or Eddy on a girl, but I'd pick Edmonia for Ed.Masculine NN:
Tahlia "Tolly"
Cadence "Cade"
Leonora "Leo"Unisex NN:
Teresa "Reese"
Skyler "Sky"
Carolinda "Lindy"
Edwina or Edna, I suppose. I'd prefer Edwina.
It does not please me. I would choose Edelgard.I love Artemisia "Art".
Love it! Edwina would be my long form of choice.I love the idea of Bill for Sibyl or Sibylla.
If I had to use Ed as a girls' nn or else be shot, I'd give her the initials ED, like Erin Dawn or Elena Dominique.I actually know a lady named Eddie. I think it might be her full name. Her husband's name is Frank, and when I hear people talk about Frank and Eddie, it sounds like a 1960s Motown act. Very nice people.
I love the idea of Ed or Eddie on a girl, short for Edna. That's what I'd pick!Oh I misunderstood the second question! I like Billie or Bill, short for Belinda or Sybil.
