I’ve loved this name since I was little, and would consider it one of my favorite names. What do you think of Maria?

I'm a Maria! I think it's funny when people think it's strongly religious, or assume I'm Latin American - it's a very basic, boring name here, with no religious connotations (my parents are atheists).
I don’t get the “it’s so religious “ thing either, is that an Anglosphere thing? In Italy it’s somewhat fallen out of use but probably because it’s considered overused, and not because it’s considered too religious. If I met a little Maria I’d assume she was named after a grandmother.
I know many people named Maria (though spelled different where I live). It is a fine name.
In the past I strongly disliked it because of being too holy name for my taste, then because it was popular, basic + old lady vibe.
Now I like it and variants of Maria, also I'm not meeting anymore many women named "Maria/Marie/Mary" in real life, so not a big fan but I like it.
I think it's very flexible when pairing with middle names and last names - you sort of can't get it wrong because of its presence in many cultures - it's safe and nice option.

We wanted to name our first daughter after her grandmothers. My mother had only one name, Beatrice, so that was easy, but DH's mother, who died when he was just 5, was Afrikaans-speaking and her names were Bertha Maria. In Afrikaans, Bertha sounds like Bear-tah, but when she married my FIL they used the English pronunciation. We decided against Beatrice Bertha, and Maria made it all too long (her first name was Caroline), so we named her Caroline Beatrice Mary instead. We didn't dislike Maria particularly, but apart from the length issue, Mary was definitely English, and Maria can appear in umpteen languages.
I think it’s a terrible name to inflict upon a child. Mary, Marie, and Marina are all gorgeous usable names, while Maria is unusable.
Huh? Why is it unusable?

Maria is the normal version of Mary in a lot of languages, there’s zero reason for it to be awkwardly religious and not Mary or Marie. It’s also extremely common so by default not « unusable. »
Yes, but the Roman form is the one I find the most unusable. Also, I do truly find Maria ugly. The other variants aren’t that way for me.
I think it's better than Mary as it has more appeal and will likely stay popular forever without becoming outdated (even with the rise of atheism, more devout Christians will still use the name).
But I do not think that all Christians should name their daughter Mary or Elizabeth (similarly, I do not think all Muslims should name their son Muhammed, both Muhammed and Mary/Maria are allegedly the most popular names in the world).

It's a beautiful name, and never out of style or dated, and works with all kinds of languages and ethnicities. I would have considered it for our daughter but it's one name my husband really doesn't like.
