Is this the name of someone you met?
If I encountered it where I live, I would assume that it's a surname name, but it being a respelling of Marcus would be plausible, too. It's strange, but I don't really dislike it. It sounds like a name, although I don't particularly enjoy how it looks. It also shows up on here as a variant of Marquis, an old french name.

Haven't met Mr Marques! If I had, I'd have certainly asked him. He's in the newspapers for being a sportsman. We don't have a large Spanish or French population here, so their names tend to be somewhat distorted. I've heard the name Jacques pronounced like Jacks, for instance.
The Afrikaans community is a melting plot of predominantly Dutch, French and German origin, but there are prominent Spanish and Portuguese influences as well. Ferreira is a common "Afrikaans" surname for example.
