Hager comes up as Dutch and Germanic name. It is possibly derived from hag "hedge, enclosure," or Hadegar, from hadu "battle, combat" and gar "spear."

The name is of German (and Austrian and Alsatian) origin. It finally comes from the word Hag "Hedge", either from a house close to a hedge or from settlements names Haag, Hag, or Hagen.
