The book How Green was my Valley (1939) by Richard Llewellyn has a Bronwen, and when it was made into a film in 1941 they spelt it Bronwyn. That's when Bronwyn started trending in Australia. The English author Gladys Bronwyn Stern (born Gladys Bertha Stern) published under the name G.B. Stern but media about her usually mentions her full name. She was active 1920s to 1940s and into the 60s. Bronwyn is usual form found being used as a surname and a place name, so it might have been the more familiar spelling when they produced the movie.
