[Opinions] WDYTO Rex?
Rex has been stuck in my head. How usable is it? Too much of a dog name? Could it be a nickname for something?

Replies

While I associate it with dogs, it's definitely usable. It's better as a nickname for Reginald.
Rex has been becoming a bit of a guilty pleasure for me recently. I don't really relate it to dogs whatsoever. Not unless the connection has already been made for me like here. It makes me think of cats. And dinosaurs, of course. But I don't think that makes it unusable.
Sounds too short, like a nickname.
Conceptually I don't hate it. I've encountered it and don't mind it.But as far as whether or not I see it as personally useable... no, I hear it and think pet of some form. Or maybe a dinosaur.
I like it. It's very cool name as a person also maybe as a nicknamed for Reginald but I associated with cartoon character but I don't associated with dogs tho.
it just sounds like a dog's name, but the kind of dog's name that's so cliched you don't even meet dogs named Rex. Like Rover or Fido.
I like it. It's my uncle's name. My cousin (his daughter) named her son after him: Theodore Rex, and his nn is T-Rex lol He also gets called by his full name a lot. It's very cute, imoHer dad is like an Ozarks version of Boomhauer from King of the Hill lol so I associate the name with guys like him, cause there's a couple Rex's down here (went through some regional popularity I guess). I also, funnily, associate the name with like 50s/60s style noir P.I.s. He could've been another cop in L.A. Confidential. And, of course, Rex Manning.

I love Rex as a person name, it's eccentric and fun. It's funny that so many people think of it as a dog name, when I don't think Rex has been a common dog name for something like 60 years? I think it's useable. It could be a unique nickname for something like Reggie, instead of Reg. Especially if it was "Reginald Xavier" or something. Oh, Reginald was actually the real name of the actor Rex Harrison! So it's not too much of a stretch. Or maybe Richard, because that's a "kingly" name? I actually like that a lot.
You know, seeing Richard mentioned, Rex would be a fun nn for a boy called Kingsley or Royal.
I'm not crazy for it, but I don't hate it. It just sounds more suitable for a dog and also makes me think of T-Rex and of pharmacies, mainly prescriptions. I have a friend named Rex, so some good association with it.
I have a great uncle named Rex. I’m not sure if it’s his real name but it always seemed comical to me, especially since my grandpa (his brother) has the middle name LeRoy. I guess my great grandparents liked names that mean king in different languages.
Very canine where I live; could perhaps work as a nn for Reginald?
It's a bold choice, but I like it. I think it could work well in a middle spot. As a first name, it would take a confident kid to pull it off, but it's definitely doable. As for it being a dog's name, I've never heard it used in that context, but that's me.
