[Opinions] Re: Crystal
I was almost named this (with a "kre8tive" spelling) in the mid 80s. It's a nice sound, and I love crystals, so no problems there. I think I just would have been miffed at its popularity because even with the altered spelling, I would have just been one of four Crystals in class. I don't feel the name is tarnished by crystal meth, most people just call it meth in my area. It's more tarnished by being extremely 80s, and very similar to Christine and Kristen/Kristin, which I think people are tired of at the moment. Crystal could come back, in a generation or two. Once the Crystals become grandmas and great-grandmas, the name could be appreciated again, along with other word names from that era like Amber, Brandy, and Heather. One of Joan Crawford's famous characters from the 1939 movie "The Women" was named Crystal, so that always gave it a more retro, art deco glam appeal to me. Her Crystal was a beautiful, tough-talking, homewrecking perfume counter girl, so I think even then the name had a bit of a "trashy" label. But that doesn't bother me.
