[Opinions] Rogue

WDYT of this name for a girl? It's pronounced ROW-g. Like "row" your boat. A friend of my dh's wants to name his daughter this one day. Here's the meaning of the word (if you don't already know)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue

Out of the X-Men, Rogue was my least favorite, next to Cyclops. So no, never on an actual person.

I went thru a stage where I wanted to name a little boy Rowdy but I think it, Rouge and Ryder are best left in books now

Well, I think I always liked the sound of Rogue as a name, but the meaning totally ruins it. It's one of those weird guilty pleasure things that doesn't fit my naming style at all. :-) ¡VIVA ESPAÑA!

Not a good idea for a person, esp. a girl. IMO.

It reminds me of X-Men. I just can't see this as a name on a real person.

Honestly,IF I saw this as a name (which I have a hard time doing, lol), I'd like it only on a boy. ;o)

i would have been inclined to say the same...until I read slblond's comment.

I saw the subject line and assumed it was for a boy, and was already gearing up for a rant about societal encouragement of rebelion and misbehavior in males and oh the damage cause by the gender binary... :)Anyway, I'm excited that somebody wants to use it on a girl, that's really interesting.-- Sarah

I'm sorry, but the meaning of the word given in the Wikipedia article is the sixth definition given in the Wiktionary article:http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/rogueI believe that the primary definition of this word in English is still the #1 given in Wiktionary:A scoundrel, rascal or unprincipled, deceitful, and unreliable personAs such I do not think it is an appropriate word to turn into a child's name, any more than words like Rascal, Scoundrel, Criminal, Jerk, or Womanizer are appropriate words to turn into children's names in English speaking countries.

uhoh...,Yah, I see what you mean. Dont' get me wrong, I wouldn't use this name myself. The truth is, his fiance is much younger than him (26), hes' 42 and she know not of X-men, or of the negative definitions of the word. And I got the "don't tell her" half joke, but actually serious nod from him!

1) Someone likes X-men
2) Rogues are cool in FBI stories, but I would never wish my daughter to be one.

Yes, two good points.
Kinda too bad the movie has been such a big hit, otherwise, the comic book reference would have probably slipped under the radar.

It's a really popular brewery here. And a river, probably where the brewery got it's name. But point is, in Oregon Rogue = high quality beer.I don't think it has a nice sound at all as a name, especially for a girl. A dog maybe. A male dog.

Ha! That's how I feel about the name Riley. A male dog's name =).

he's not that open to discussion......which I suppose I must respect, I just wish he'd be a little more straight forward with his fiance about ALL of its meanings, so she could make an educated decision.

Sounds like someone's an X-Men fan to me.

...And then he said, "You're independent, aren't you?"
"Yes," said Laura.A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.

Thinking the same thing.I love X-Men and I have thought about Rogue too, but that would be a tad over board. Even to me who likes picking up names from that sort of things.
