[Opinions] I'm pretty sure what they meant...

Was that her surname was Magill, and that she called herself Lil as a short form of her given name (whatever it was). Thus making her Givenname "Lil" Magill, not Magill "Lil."
I absolutely adore Lil--I think of Lil Hardin Armstrong, who was quite equally cool as Louis, IMO--but Magill sounds awkward and unflattering to my ears. It also reminds me of The Baby-Sitters Club--Stacey's surname was McGill.
I love "Rocky Raccoon," too--actually I love everything on the White album, which is my favourite after Rubber Soul--but I'd use Gideon, myself. I think the lines about "Gideon checked out and he left it [the Bible], no doubt, to help with good Rocky's revival" are hilarious. :D

ETA: I haven't heard the song in a while, as you might be able to guess! I went and looked up the words--can't find my copy to listen to--and it says everyone knew her as Nancy. Which would make her Nancy "Lil" Magill, I suppose. Or Lil "Nancy" Magill. One of the two. :)
...And then he said, "You're independent, aren't you?"
"Yes," said Laura.
A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.
