Yuri is all male to me.
Yuri is the Russian form of George. To me, it would be like naming a girl Boris or Vladimir.
Dr. Zhivago's name in the book is Yuri. He was played by Omar Sharif (sp?) in the movie. His love interest in the book is Lara, if that helps to ring a bell. Then there's Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet cosmonaut. To sum up, I just can't picture Yuri on a girl.
I must admit I don't like the name Yuri, even for a boy. I always think, "urine." Sorry.

Yuri is not okay as a girl's name.
I explained it here: http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=603443&board=baby
Please don't. Sayuri or Yuriko? Sure. But not Yuri.

Your concern about a reference to anime is likely to apply to only a small percentage of the population. Far more people are going to hear a Russian man's name when they hear Yuri.
I admit a bias here because I feel personally attached to the name Yuri for its meaning, which I do not associate with "girly-bits" or explicit fiction or lesbianism or any other negative reference. I also don't take that reference from Georgia O'Keeffe. Given that Sayuri means "small lily" and Yuriko is a child's diminutive of Yuri, I think those choices diminish the name and its sweet, simple meaning.
Your concern, while justified, rational and frank, opens up a whole other can of worms for me about art and rainbows and co-opted symbols that we should probably discuss in the Lounge some time.
Just my opinion.

I agree. Too masculine.
=)
=)
That wasn't my reasoning, but okay. ;-)
Honestly, it doesn't sound particularly masculine or feminine to me. It sounds like an explicit story. Period.

that's okay i think, but if i saw the name without know the person i would definately think its a boy. (its funny cause i'm reminded of my sociology teacher, fn yuri. my friend and all always referred to him as yuri, and he always wore the same red sweater with a hole in the armpit, even when it was 80 degrees out.)
