[Opinions] Howl?
I watched Howl's Moving Castle yesterday, and last month I read the book. Of course, as usually happens with books or movies I really like, I'm starting to like the name Howl - on a boy, of course, like in the book/movie. I'm not sure, though, whether I like it more as a first or middle name... I think I prefer it as a first name, but I can see some definite teasing potention there, especially if the kid is on the... loud side. I can't help but kind of like it anyway, though. So WDYT of Howl? Any ideas for combos, with it as either a fn or mn?-------

I love the book, but I don't think I'd use Howl as a real first name. I think it could be great as a middle name, though. I also would consider Howell (since it does have a definite connection to the book, being Howl's "real" name).

I perceive howling as a very negative thing. Hence I find Howl as a name no good idea.*****

Howl isn't my thing, butthe "how" sound is good for me. I like Howard, and if Howe or Howell were surnames close enough in my family tree they're ones that I'd possibly consider. Howe, especially, I think is kind of sweet. I told my mother a while ago that I liked the name Howard and she was repulsed. :-/ Oh well.

I am thinking of all these crazy play-on-names to use Howl as a nn, like Howl-exander. Bad Halloween jokes. I don't know...Britney Tamber

I think it's an adorable nickname, a great name for a pet, and excellent on the character - I loved the movie, too. But as a real first name? I'm not sure. I love the way the word looks, and I definitely could consider using it as a nn because it's fun and cute, but I still wouldn't call my child that. But it's definitely got "guily pleasure" appeal - I'm actually liking it more and more as I type this :-)Combos:Howl Matthias

I was thinking of it as a nn too, but I couldn't think of anything I could use it as a nn for. Hmm....Out of your combos, I like:Howl Matthias
Howl Alistair (the L thing throws me, though, like it does with Howl Oliver....)
Howl Caspian
Howl Oliver
Howl Edward (I don't even really like Edward, but I like this combo)
Howl Lachlan (again with the L's, though)
Howl Cormac
Howl Janus
Howl Patrick
Howl Neil
Howl Daniel
Howl Lysander
Howl Simon
Howl Declan
Howl Constantine (I'm really liking this, for some reason; possibly because Howl is so short and Constantine seems to balance it)

Howl Oliver is cute, but a little "L" heavy. They're just a bit too close together; it's hard to enunciate.-------

Hmm. Well, anything goes in the middle name spot, really, but it would seem a little odd to me to name your son, essentially, "doleful cry."-- Sarah

Perhaps the spelling "Howell" would be more appropriate. I would use it as a mn.Britney Tamber

Howell was, in the book, the original spelling of Howl, I believe. Howl's sister used that spelling, but Howl himself and everyone else used Howl. I'm not sure I really like the spelling Howell... it reminds me too much of Howard, and I really don't like that name.-------
