[Opinions] Clarissa
Replies
I adored this name when I was growing up. Then the show "Clarissa Explains It All" came along and kind of ruined it for me. (Many of you here are too young to remember that show. It was on Nickelodeon and starred Melissa Joan Hart, who later played "Sabrina the Teenage Witch") In elementary school, I became enamoured of Clarissa "Clara" Barton, who started the Red Cross. When I'd play "Little House on the Prairie" with friends (we'd pretend we lived in the 'olden days', LOL), my name was always Clarissa nn Clara. I don't dislike Clarissa now, it's just a bit too frilly for me, though I do prefer it to Clarice / Clarisse. I much prefer Clara on its own, though.

I like Clarissa, but prefer Carissa. A friend I had at primary school had Carissa as a middle name (full name = Kimberly Carissa), and I've always thought it was pretty.
For Clarissa:
Clarissa Eloise
Clarissa Renee
Clarissa Brooke
Clarissa Soleil
Clarissa Justine
Clarissa Noelle
Clarissa Juliet
Clarissa Paige
Clarissa Faith
Clarissa Anais
I think it's a little bit fiddly as a middle name - having the hard 'cla' sound, and 'liss' at the end, makes it sound almost like a tongue twister, with some of the first names I tried to put with it! I'm going to attempt to convert you to Carissa, instead :-)
Penelope Carissa
Adelaide Carissa
Ariadne Carissa
Beatrice Carissa
Margot Carissa
Meredith Carissa
Sophie Carissa
Violet Carissa
Shamelessly stole those from your personal name list, and here's a few more from me:

I love Clarisse and Clarissa both. My favourite combo is Clarissa Violet--it sounds like violets in the snow to me, and the image is so striking that I can't resist it. :)
ETA: Most children of the 90s are probably going to remember Clarissa Explains It All, especially since it's now available on DVD (yay!). Which is not necessarily a bad thing--in fact, I'd consider it a positive association, because it was a great show and she was a great Clarissa--but I don't think the memory has faded all that much.

It's not my favorite,
but I can think of things I like less. I'd take Clarice over Clarissa, and I'd take Clarity, Chloris, and Clovia over that, as far as "Cl" or "Cl" sounding names go. I generally like that kind of beginning but the -issa, I think, is what I don't care for.
Yep... what I like balances out what I don't, so I'm sorry to say I'm just neutral on this one. :-) I thought I had a more interesting opinion to share, but there you go!

LOL! Your opinion is appreciated, interesting or not. :)
I'm sort of apprehensive about the -issa, too, since I usually think of it as fluffy sounding, so we'll see.

Same here.
-issa has been steadily beaten to death for me by the overabundance of Melissas.
Clarissa's a tough one for me to call. I like the Clar- and that it's not another Clare or Claire, but the -issa... Hm.

I like the sound of Clarissa more. A girl named Clarice would definitely get Silence of the Lambs jokes.. this is coming from a Claire that always has people going "Hello, Clarice", so I'm just assuming :P

It does have the "Clarissa Explains It All" association, but at least that's somewhat less creepy than Silence of the Lambs.
I like Clarissa more, regardless. It looks prettier, and I agree that it has a better sound.
For combos, how about:
Clarissa Margot
Clarissa Violet
Clarissa Faye
Clarissa Eve
Clarissa Gwen
Clarissa Glory
Clarissa Madeline
Clarissa Helene
Clarissa Fleur
Clarissa Leonie

Four words...Clarissa Explains It All. I liked the show and I like the name. Maybe you can escape that since it was on a long time ago on Nickelodean. Clarice of course makes me think of Silence of the Lambs, which would be much harder to escape. I definately think Clarissa is best.

What about the 1990s Nickelodeon show, Clarissa Explains it All, starring Melissa Joan Hart?
EDIT: Oh, but I love them both. I can't decide which one I like more. Clarice is pretty and ballerina-ish, and Clarissa is...um...spunky. They're both equally great.

I've thought of the show, but I think that's been long enough that it's not the immediate association, unlike with Clarice, when everyone will start talking about fava beans and chianti.
Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words.
You assume I think pop culture associations are bad. Not true, just that I don't want it to be the first thing that comes to mind. I actually prefer the Clarice association because I think her job is wonderful and I have a personal relation with it, but I'm more a realist than a sentimental, and I know that the SotL jokes would be never ending, that's all.
ETA that Clarissa is growing on me as a I read Mrs. Dalloway, so while it's not a pop culture association, it would probably be my association.

I wasn't assuming that. I was just stating that I don't think they're bad.
For the last part, I was saying that in general, for anybody who happened to be reading it. Sorry, should have been more clear.

Yes, I use to watch it alot when I was in elementary school. I use to really hate Ferguson's name but now I think it's ok. I think the name Clarissa is nice also, partially because it is similar to my name. I also use to like Pete and Pete and various other Nick shows.
Never cared much for Clarice... it sounds unfinished to me.

*sigh* That was back when Niceklodeon was, um, better. I miss those days.
I think I had the same reaction to Ferguson. It is a great name, but I think I would use it on a cat. I don't know why, I just picture a cute little kitty named Ferguson.

I think that it may have been better back then, but it has gotten better than it was 5 years ago.
And yes Ferguson would be a cute cat name. ^_^

Really? I think it's gotten worse. I only watch Avatar.
...but then again, it is a KID'S network, and I'm no longer one of those.

All I know is about 5 or 6 years ago of so all the cartoon channels got really stupid shows, that had no adult references, and were purely fart humor. Then about 2 years ago or something like that they got more new shows, the majority of them ok, but not as good as the really old ones, and got rid of most of the really stupid ones and keep some of the ok ones. On Nick I think Camp Lazlo is ok, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Odd Parents, Avatar, Kappa Mikey, and Sponge Bob Square Pants. There might be a few I'm forgeting, but oh well. Disney Channel went down hill around that time, and now has gotten even more down hill. And Cartoon Network, excluding Toonami got bad also around 5 or 6 years ago, they got rid of most of the really bad ones, kept most of the good ones, and now have a few more good shows recently. Adult Swim keeps getting better and better in my opinion. Adult Swim has some of the best shows on TV right now. Other than shows like Project Runway - which is going downhill - Lost, House, and a few other non-animated shows.
Well that is all I'm going to say. I think we have degressed really far away from the original topic. If you want to reply please send me a BTN e-mail. Thanks. ^_^

I was thinking the same thing, so it's not that unpopular in the way of showbusiness association.
