[Opinions] Tennessee
WDYT? Do you think this is actually a name or just a pathetic attempt to give their child a creative name?

LOVE It!
It actually made the short go when I was trying to come up with a name for Hollis? maybe it was Logan? Anywhooo... I loved Tennessee Louise Wright "Tess". Russell vetoed it because he didn't want to struggle everytime he went to spell her name... I laughed!

I knew a little girl
in New Zealand who was named Tennesse.
in New Zealand who was named Tennesse.
I like it, for either sex--I think of Tennessee Williams--but I'd never use it. As my sister so eloquently put it when I brought the name up once:
"Are you from Tennessee? Because you're the only ten I see!"
And even if not everyone would do that, my sister would. So it's a no-go for me. But I think it's great--much better than Tennyson.

I need its noises in my ears.

As far as place names go...
this is one I don't mind. I think it sounds rather snappy, and since my first thought was Tennessee Williams, I can see it as a name.
It also probably helps that I know a rather smart, funny, attractive boy from Tennessee. So I think of him, too. ;-)
I could see it as a masculine or feminine name, really. Either's good.

I spent one night in Tennessee!
Nasty jokes.
Not a girl's name. Not a name. It's a state where people live.

I ADORE Tennessee for a girl

Tennesse Jane Bunny Thomas
now how is that for a name?
Tennesse (Thomas) is the name of the drummer from the band The Like.

I like it. I think it's interesting and good for either gender. I prefer it on a girl.
I think it needs a name thats feminine, folksy and unpretentious. although I have to admit Tennessee Jane Bunny is pretty good. here are some other ideas:
Tennessee Jean
Tennessee Gemma
Tennessee Roxane
Tennessee Nova
Tennessee Svea
Tennessee Wilda
Tennessee Honora
Tennessee Rexanne
Tennessee Axelle
Tennessee Ginger
Junia Tennessee
Exie Tennessee
Jem Tennessee
Maisie Tennessee
Ila Tennessee
Luella Tennessee

Of course it's actually a name. The names of all the US states have been given to children from time to time. The most famous person named Tennessee was probably Tennessee Claflin, younger sister of the even better known feminist Victoria Woodhull:

Never heard of Tennessee Claflin...
I would have to argue more people know Tennessee Williams

Yes, more people know of Tennessee Williams, but I also think most people know that was originally his nickname, not his given name. His birth certificate name was Thomas Lanier Williams.

Hmm, I don't know, I think it's ok, but only because of Tennessee Williams.
I agree - Tennessee Williams makes the name alright...
In my opinion, anyway. It's just like naming a child after a beloved book character, movie characters, author, actor, etc... it just happens to be more unique.
If I ran into a child with this name I certainly wouldn't think their parents are high-school drop-out hillbillies - I'd think they were fairly well educated, degree carrying, literary loving people.

Well, not exactly...
...since that wasn't his real name. He was born Thomas Lanier Williams.
DH :-)

It's a state.
It's the name of a US State is the South, and so it's a place name. Don't worry, that doesn't automatically make me hate it. There are some place names that are guilty pleasures of mine, like Dakota and Montana. Nevada too!
But Tennessee doesn't sound very good as a name, in my opinion. Trendy, because of the ee's (though that is the legitimate spelling), and trendy because it is a place name. I don't like it, personally.

I don't like it either.
Loving Theodore and Chloe!
I agree
Even though I would never use them myself because I couldnt bring myself to (I loathe word, season, state, place, and all other such names). However, I do have a few guilty pleasures I like to see on other people children (the ones you mentioned - Dakota, Montana and Nevada).
Tennessee is not really one of them, although it could be worse. I think I am not loathing it because a song I like "For a girl called Tennessee"...anyway, I dont loathe it, but I also dont really like it either

Oh, okay!
I wasn't sure, hehe.
I think I just don't like it because I don't especially like the sound, or the ee's. The fact that it's a state doens't bother me. But when i hear it, I do think of primarily a state, while with Dakota, I think of an actress!

Lol, yeah. I think part of my attraction towards it is because one of my favorite bands, Sugarland, has a song called Tennessee, which is about a girl called Tennessee, lol.
