Would Aleksi be too ethnic for a Brit to get away with?

That's one of my choices, too, as an alternate to Alexander. I think it sounds mainstream enough to work in Britain or America, yet isn't boring. Russian names are written in the Cyrillic alphabet (so there is no "right" spelling in our alphabet), but I have always seen it translated Aleksey or Alexei.
And you're right about the pronunciation--either aLEKsee or aLEXsay. I have heard it both ways, but more often aLEKsay.
