It's not wrong. It's the British pronunciation. They would say Maria as Americans say Mariah. The British often use a long "i" sound where continental languages would use an "ee" sound. It's why Hermione comes to us as "hehr-MIE-uh-nee" and not "her-MEE-uh-nee" as I suspect the Greeks would say. I'm indebted to the Brits for the pronunciation of one of my favorite names: Iphigenia. "if-ih-jeh-NIE-a" is ever-entrancing for me.

I'm British, and pronounce Sophia 'So-FEE-a' and Maria 'Mah-REE-a.'- I've never heard it pronounced like Mariah here :-)

Well, my father was born and raised in the U.K. and that's how he pronounces the name. I grew up watching BBC shows and heard it before. I still have aunts / uncles and cousins there so I'll poll them. :-)

My g-g-grandma was Maria pr. Mariah...and she was from Cornwell
