[Surname] Re: Rozwod?
in reply to a message by megan
A Polish dictionary explains the word rozwód as meaning "divorce" or "annulment(of marriage)". The surname Rozwód is found in Poland, as is the rarer Rozwoda, and the even rarer Rozwod (different pronunciation). But can it mean "divorce"? I'm not convinced. I'm wondering if it might have started out as something else that was close in sound to rozwód. Maybe it was German.

"Divorce" is the secondary meaning of the Slavonic word "razvod/rozvod".Another meaning is: "change/shift of guards/sentries; posting of sentries".The primary meaning comes from the verb "voditi" which means "leading/guiding/conducting". The the prefix "roz/raz" corresponds to "dis-" (Latin) or "dia-" (Greek). In English, the verb "rozvoditi" , allong with "divorcing", can be "guiding around", "(make horses) walking", etc.
