[Opinions] Nanook
I've realized that I really like the name Nanook, only on a girl, not a boy. That is assuming, however, that Nanook is pronounced with a short oo (as in book), as opposed to a long oo (as in cool).

Perfect for a samoyed
Since Nanook means "polar bear", this is what I think of when I hear the name. I remember a book from childhood, named "Nanook, a polar bear" about the life of a polar bear.
It sounds very strange as a girl's name. I could only picture this name on a male Inuit or a pet.
- She said he made a racial slur!
- Racial? She is Swedish!
- Maybe he called her Meatball.
"I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’ve decided to be spontaneous."

The oo sound in Nanook is the same as the oo sound in book or hook.
I do not think it is a good first name for a little girl, at all. If you are Eskimo, it might be different, but I am assuming you are not.
I do like the name Nanook--the next dog we get, that is the name I have reserved for it. (no joke--I have been considering it for 3 years!) I want a big white dog that looks like a polar bear.

It's always seemed to me like the stereotypical Eskimo name--like, y'know, no one knows any other Inuit names (adding to that, it's the only Inuit name in the database here). There's something that seriously bugs me about it in that respect.
As a nickname for a very young girl--like a toddler--I think it'd be fine. I say so because in my family, pacifiers are called nooks (pronunced just like the second syllable in Nanook), and so it seems really childish. As a full name for a girl, I find it really unfortunate. I wouldn't want to be named Nanook, and I can't think of too many people I know who would say otherwise.

I need the smell of summer--
I need its noises in my ears.
A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.

It is pronounced as na-nokh literally, remember the 'h' while pronouncing it, as the end 'ock' of the word 'hammock', so you are right there somewhat.
I kinda like it.

I pronounce it with the oo like in book.
It makes me think of polar bears.
It is slightly better on boys, but I don't actually like it for either.

It makes me think "Nanu, Nanu" as in Mork and Mindy. It would be difficult to take someone with this name seriously.
