Would this author be Elphinstone Dayrell? If so, he was born in 1869 and died in 1917, and the books he wrote all seem to be about Nigerian folktales. It was more common for men to have unusual surnames as given names back then. I think today it would be a little much, unless you were related to Mr. Dayrell himself.
