[Opinions] Smeagal
I seriously think they should start imposing laws in the UK that mean you can't give children ridiculous names. It's a form of child abuse, akin to calling the poor thing "Kick Me".This was in this week's Chat ('You called them what?'):Smeagal - "We're huge Lord of the Rings fans and when out son was born, we chose Smeagal, but put an 'a' at the end instead of an 'o'. Thing is, our boy is as beautiful as Smeagol is ugly."Okay, I can symphathise with the fact that they wanted to name their child after something from their favourite fandom - hell, half of my children are going to be named after characters in Tomb Raider - but, c'mon, there are slightly more attractively-named (and, let's face it, attractive) characters than bloody Smeagol (for those that aren't too up on LOTR, Smeagol is apparently that imp-thing that's also known as Gollum).Last week in Chat, they had "Phil McAvitee", but I think that was a fake letter.

"You've become quite a stud."
"And...you're the most stylin' girl in the world."

Ick. I wonder how either of them would feel if they had been named Smeagal.

Probably perfectly fine. The idea that parents who give their children names that one doesn't like would not have wanted to have these names themselves is illogical. If the parents had your opinion of the name, they wouldn't have used it. :)

Even worse than the fact that the name sounds very unattractive, and its namesake is as well, it reminds me of the word 'smegma'. :-/

It sounds like a nice name for a dog.:Marie:.
Future Mummy to Cassius Aeson, Beatrice Helena & Antoinette ???

How awful! Couldn't they find a better name from the Lord of the Rings. Why choose Smeagol/Smeagal when there are so many other names that are so much nicer?
Otherwise I think it's kind of cute to name a child after a character. I know that there are some children named Skywalker in Sweden, and also Darth and Vader, (which is not so cute).
And I would possibly like to name a future son Fox after Fox Mulder in the X-files.
