[Opinions] Tobias and Veronica
Replies
I like Tobias and Veronica in their full forms, they're both cool names! I don't think it would be hard to insist that they're both called by their full names. They're both more well known in their complete forms than in their shortened forms - as opposed to names like Elizabeth and Michael which are almost always shortened to Liz and Mike. I wouldn't even think to shorten Veronica to Ronnie if it weren't for the short lived Kirsty Alley sitcom. As for Tobias... that could be a bit more difficult because of Toby MaGuire, however, not impossible. Besides, Tobias was used in the animorph books, and those were insanely popular, and his names was never shortened to Toby...

I think Tobias and Veronica would make a great sibset. I too really like the name Tobias but hate the nn Toby. I don't think it'd be too hard to prevent the Toby nn in environments where you have more control but in environments where you have less control, like what his school friends call him, Tobias may decide on his own that he prefers Toby. I've known two Tobiases (Tobiai? Tobii?) and both went by Toby. I think the nn issue is the same with Veronica. I know two Veronicas. One is Ronnie. The other is just Veronica and has never gone by any nn. So I think it's plausible for Veronica to not have a nn.
Uh....okay. Some us just aren't as quick with the unflattering uses I guess. I can't think of any... (please, there's no need to explain though) but at least you know what you think and why.
My opinion...
I don't think it would be too difficult to insist on Tobias and not Toby. Of course, when your son grows up, there's the possibility that he may LIKE Toby, and request that his friends call him that... so you run that risk by using the name.
The Ronnie dilemma can easily be avoided by using another nickname - Vera or Nic/Nikki would be my suggestions. The inherent problem with Veronica is that it is so long that people want to use a shorter form at least some of the time. If your daughter went by Veronica, and sometimes Nic, no one would call her Ronnie.
