Does anyone know the history of this as a girls first name? I've only ever seen it as a last name, and suddenly it's on the SSA Top 1000. I think it reentered after a few years off the charts. What's the deal?

The singer probably does have a lot to do with the present upsurge in the name. But in terms of its origin, Lucero seems to be another Marian devotion name, because I've found references to schools or churches called "Nuestra Señora del Lucero" (Our Lady of the Lucero) in both Madrid, Spain and in the country of Colombia in South America.

In Spanish, "lucero" is a synonim of "estrella" (star).
