While both the modern-day French word which literally means "female friend" and the American variation on the spelling of "Amy" may look alike, I don't think they are pronounced quite the same way.
And, of course, this website does point to the common root of both "Amie" and "Amy" -- which is the Old French word of "aimée", meaning "beloved". One's "beloved", BTW, can also be one's "friend" -- provided she's a very *good* friend.
However, if you e-mail our Glorious Leader, Mike C., at
