[Opinions] Opinions on Marigold
Someone suggested in my Chrysanthemum thread that Marigold was an alternative. Funny because my sister has been BADGERING me to use that name since I started having kids 13 years ago.
My questions are these... my sister is a huge hippy, much more so than I am.. does Marigold scream 'hippy name'?
Also, we could not call her Mary because of other family members so are we left with Goldie? She would probably be blond but hey, we can't all be as gorgeous as Goldie Hawn so....
So, Marigold as a first name... WDYT?

I like Marigold. I have it on my list for another kitty but it works for a human too, imo.
I like it
Bit of a GP name for me though, as my favorite Marigold combo is Honey Marigold. Hey, I am a child of hippies, if not a hippie myself.
I also think it would be neat to have a set of G/B twins, Marigold and Sterling.
;-)

I like it in theory, but would prefer it as a mn. Not sure that it screams 'hippy', but it really screams 'gardener' to me. :b I also wouldn't like the nn Goldie, so it would be better in the mn spot, I think. It is cute, though.
Well I consider myself "hippie" so I don't see anything wrong with names being considered hippie names. I don't think it sounds hippie though.
Marigold I was never fond of. It's pretty but I wouldn't use it.
If you like it though I'd say go for it.

Yeah, it's pretty out there. I think I'd only use it as a mn. But I'd really admire it on someone as a fn too. It would take the right kind of person to pull it off.

Yuck is the first thing that comes to find. Then again I'm not big on flowers for names.
I like Marigold. I'm not sure I would use it as a first name but I think it would make a very sweet middle name. As for the nn, I think Goldie would be fine. It seems a bit old fashioned, in the same line as Millie or Addie, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I love nns that are reminiscent of the early 1900's. On the right child, I think Goldie could be very cute.
Its not my favorite flower name but its pretty enough
I think it's nice and special. NMS but nice.
Marigold is a pretty name, but it's not one that I would use. I think that it could work for someone else's child though. I don't automatically think of a hippie when I hear the name.
I dislike Goldie as a nickname. I prefer Marigold without a nn. How about Marigold as a mn? That way you wouldn't even have to worry about nn's.

I don't like it. How about Meredith, I think It sounds really similar.
I like Marigold. It doesn't strike me as hippy-ish at all really. Someone on the board at some point came up with the combination Alice Marigold (can't remember who), and I thought it was gorgeous, so I now think of Alice Marigold when I hear it, which seems like a very sweet, romantic name to me. Goldie is ok. It could grow on me.
I personally can't imagine this as a first name because it screams last name to me. I don't like Goldie at all and if Mary as a nickname is out of question, what about Mara?
Marigold is the name of a character in a lovely book by L.M. Montgomery - Magic for Marigold. I don't know if I would use it, but it is a pretty name and I can't get rid of the pleasant association with the book.
At the beginning of the book, the whole extended family is debating over what name to give the new baby. It's interesting how they ended up settling on Marigold. (If you want to know more, read the book! Don't I sound like I should be on Reading Rainbow?) :)

no
I does not sound hippy to me, more pretentious wanna-be parent. Maybe I got that impression from a comic strip that said "they wanted her to marry gold and named her so".
It doesn't sound nice to me either, just nothing appealing about it.
When you add the prospect of the poor girl being called Goldie (strictly for a Golden Retriever if anything) the name has nothing going for it.
Sorry.
