[Opinions] Tierney
What do you think of the name Tierney (Teer-nee). Would it work for a girl as well as a boy?

I once had a co-worker whose sister or cousin or someone had a daughter they named Tierney. My co-worker said the baby was named Tierney for two reasons. First, because it was a grandmother's maiden name. Second, to honor their Irish heritage.
I've always remembered this baby's name because it was the only time I've known of a person with the fn Tierney.
This was in about 1989.

I dislike it for either; it reminds me too much of tyranny.
Long ago it used to be a major favourite, then someone mentioned that it sort of sounded like tyranny :(. I had only ever thought of using it on a girl, so I still think it works in that regard if one can get past the connotation.
I have seen it on both genders, though I prefer it for a boy. I prefer the prn Tiernach (teer-nock) but I'm not sure exactly how you would spell it. It's a great name and I would use it.
My first impression is "girl" but I dislike it on either gender. It just has a trendy 'feel' to me. :-/ And it reminds me of the word tyranny. :b
I know a girl name Tierney. I prefer it on a girl rather than a boy.
I love it but only for a boy (it is listed as a male name on here, it means 'lord' and it's not a surname and was the name of a MALE saint.)
What do you mean Tierney "is not a surname"? It certainly is; there is presently a congressman from Massachusetts named John Tierney, and there was a famous actress named Gene Tierney, to give just two examples:

Well Tierney is supposed to be a masculine name but I think its a good unisex name. I think it would work for a girl. It does sound feminine.
I know of a woman who had a daughter named Tierney recently. It's okay to me. I def. prefer it for a girl.
I think it would work better for a girl. It just sounds more feminine to me.
I think I've only heard it for a girl actually.
Don't care for it though. It sounds too much like tyranny.

It sounds more girly to me. I don't really like it.
I don't like it at all. It sounds too close to tyranny, which is definitely nota nice thing. But if I was going to use it, I would use it for a girl, it just seems too whiny-sounding and effeminate for a boy.
