I've always liked both. My grandmother was named Elsie (not a nn), and I like Elspeth and Elsa as variants because Elsie seems so nickname-y to me. And also there's the Elsie the Cow association. :b Even my grandmother was aware of that one. :)

My first instinct is to say Elsie. I love the name simply because it is my grandma's name and she's the only Elsie I know. Depending on if its a fn or mn I might actually go with Elise.
