[Opinions] Celia
What do you guys think of the name Celia? I noticed it was an anagram of my sister's name, Alice. I always wanted to use her name in some way, I have been thinking this might a a good way. Also, I have recently taken a shine to Cecilia, but it has been nixed by the man in my life because of the meaning. Maybe Celia would be a good alternative. So my questions are:
Do you think it would honour my sister, or is it just a bit corny?
Do you think it sounds too much like cilia?
Can you think of any middle names for it? Mns that can work in Portuguese as well as English are particularly welcomed.I've come up with a couple of ideas, but none of them really seem right. What do you think?
Celia Juliet
Celia Eve
Celia Antoinette
Celia Augusta
Celia Delphine
Celia Odette

I love this name. It was on my list of favorites as Cecelia, and then I removed it as I narrowed my choices. I'm putting it back on my list as simply Celia. I love the combo Celia Josephine.

A lovely ideausing Celia as an anagram of Alice. I'm sure Pavlos the Anagram King would approve! I also honor honoring, even in a sort of sideways approach like this. Points for creativity. :-)I like Celia mainly as a nn for Cecelia. I prefer Cecelia to Cecilia, because I prn it seh-SEEL-yah, and if the emphasis is going to be on a long E sound in the second syllable, then it only makes sense to me to spell it with an E in that spot.I agree with Array that using a mn starting with a vowel makes pronunciation awkward. With a 3-syl fn, either long or short names work as mn's. How aboutCelia Marguerite
Celia Fleur
Celia Joan
Celia Demetria
Celia Natasha
Celia Salome
Celia Phoebe
Celia Tatiana
Celia Claudia

Thanks. Of your suggestions I like:Celia Marguerite
Celia Demetria- My grandpa's name is Dimitri, so I'd be happy to use this.
Celia Natasha- I prefer Natasa, my grandma's name.
Celia Phoebe
Celia Tatiana
Celia Claudia- L's Dad was named Claudio, so it would be nice to use this. I'm not sure about it with Celia though.

Lol, I was just thinking about how Alice & Celia are anagrams the other day. I think it's a neat way to honor your sister...more like an inside joke way of honoring her, but definitely not corny. I love both Celia and Cecilia. I prefer Celia pronounced SEH-lyah (and my family is Hispanic and Spanish-speaking, so that's standard for us). I don't think this pronunciation or the SEE-lee-uh pronunciation should be too similar to cilia.Right now my #1 girl combo is Celia Mehitabel. I always thought Mehitabel was so over the top / unusable, but with Celia, for some reason, I love it. It seems you like French names, so I'll base my list on that...Celia Pascale
Celia Manon
Celia Louison
Celia Salomé
Celia Philomène
Celia Sandrine
Celia Victoire
Celia Thaïs
Celia Clémence
Celia Valentine
Celia Nathalie
Celia Marcelle
Celia Ghislaine

Using Celia to honor Alice would be a fabulous idea, imo. Not corny. :) I love both Celia and Cecilia, but I agree that "heaven" is a better meaning than "blind". :-/ I don't automatically think of 'cilia', and actually Celia lends to it less than Cecilia, at least spelling and sound-wise. Celia Eve and Celia Juliet are lovely, and even though I love Augusta, I'm not big on the double -a endings. Some suggestions:
Celia Isabel
Celia Marguerite
Celia Naomi
Celia Rosemary
Celia Marisol
Celia Bernadette
Celia Neves (even though I'm not positive on prn.)
Celia Ester
Celia Evelyn - maybe flows a bit better than Eve?
Celia Raquel
Celia Ines - gorgeous! (INÊS)
Celia Iris - gorgeous! (ÍRIS)

Thanks for you thoughts and the combos.I really like:
Celia Marguerite
Celia Rosemary- I usually like other Ros- names better, but this is nice.
Celia Marisol
Celia Ester- I have an great aunt Ester.
Celia Evelyn - maybe flows a bit better than Eve? Agreed, and Evelyn was my great grandma Eva's "English name". She has two sets of papers, one saying Eva Rosa and the other Evelyn Rose.
Celia Ines (INÊS)- I agree this is gorgeous.
Celia Iris (ÍRIS)- I didn't realise Iris was used by Portuguese speakers. This has really pleased me!

I think it is a nice way to honor your sister.
Not at all corny! Celia was on my list long before Cecelia.
I will think of MNs later and edit them in.Of yours, Celia Augusta and Celia Delphine are striking.

I love it. I do not think it's corny, and while it wouldn't count as honouring for me personally, if you'd use it in your sister's honour, then it's honouring for you.You know what is corny? My favourite Celia combo: Celia Rosalind! :D I like Celia Delphine, but I wouldn't put a name beginning with a vowel after Celia, because you get an unfortunate little glottal stop if you do.If you need some help convincing your man that Celia's gorgeous, just pull out William Ernest Henley's "The Ballade of Ladies' Names"--here's the verse that mentions Celia:Sentiment hallows the vowels of Delia;
Sweet simplicity breathes from Rose;
Courtly memories glitter in Celia;
Rosalind savors of quips and hose,
Araminta of wits and beaux,
Prue of puddings, and Coralie
All of sawdust and spangled shows;
Anna's the name of names for me.
Now, isn't that lovely sounding? :) I think it's a perfectly beautiful little name.Array

That is just beautiful, thank you.I love almost all the names in that poem. Gosh, poetry and lots of names, my cup runneth over.Thanks as well for the note on mns beginning with a vowel. I am rather bad at putting together combos and welcome the point you make.You know, I'm loving the corny-ness of Celia Rosalind. :) Whilst I wouldn't go that far, I think my sister Alice would approve of Celia. She loves Shakespeare.

While we're doing the poetry thing . . .There's also Ben Jonson's "Song: To Celia"Drink to me, only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine:
But might I of Jove's nectar sup
I would not change for thine. I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be
But thou thereon didst only breath
And sent'st it back to me:
Since, when it grows and smells, I swear,
Not of itself but thee.
It's sweetly romantic.

Oh thank you. That is beautiful. I'm no expert, but I recognise a beautiful poem, studying science hasn't dulled my senses completely yet.I feel rather taken with Celia now.

I better give you the full poem, then! It's one of my favourites. :)"Ballade of Ladies' Names" -- William Ernest HenleyBrown's for Lalage, Jones for Lelia,
Robinson's bosom for Beatrice glows,
Smith is a Hamlet before Ophelia.
The glamor stays if the reason goes!
Every lover the years disclose
Is of a beautiful name made free.
One befriends, and all others are foes.
Anna's the name of names for me.Sentiment hallows the vowels of Delia;
Sweet simplicity breathes from Rose;
Courtly memories glitter in Celia;
Rosalind savors of quips and hose,
Araminta of wits and beaux,
Prue of puddings, and Coralie
All of sawdust and spangled shows;
Anna's the name of names for me.Fie upon Caroline, Madge, Amelia -
These I reckon the essence of prose! -
Cavalier Katherine, cold Cornelia,
Portia's masterful Roman nose,
Maud's magnificence, Totty's toes,
Poll and Bet with their twang of the sea,
Nell's impertinence, Pamela's woes!
Anna's the name of names for me.ENVOY

Sylvia prattles of Arcadee,
Sybil mystifies, Connie crows,
