I have been reading an old topic at the archives (this one:
http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=22093&board=gen) and just wanted to clarify a few things related there:
- The origin of the name is not Portuguese, Basque or Catalan.
- The name has nothing to do with the Basque name Aintzane and the meaning is not Glory (Aintzane means Glory, not Aitana).
- The name origin is from the province of Alicante (Spain) and it's the name of a mountain: Sierra de Aitana.
- The meaning of Aitana has not been proved yet, but some say that is Iberian. The Iberian tribe that lived in that territory was called Edetani and the mountain was called Edetana; so: Edetana - Aetana - Aitana.
- The name of the mountain began to be used as a female name because Spanish poet Rafael Alberti named his daughter Aitana (Aitana Alberti) because the mountain was the last thing he saw of Spain from the plane when he went to exile at the end of the Spanish Civil War. And Spanish actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón was named after Aitana Alberti, her godmother.
