[Facts] Re: Meaning of Amoakohene
in reply to a message by Barb
My last name is Ivy Amoakohene. I've been looking for the meaning as well but family is no help. I am Ghanaian. My father's (deceased) name was Amoakohene Kyei. I only realized this after he passed away. Growing up, everyone called him 'Amoakohene'. I wondered why they called him by his last name. But it wasn't his last name, it was his first name. When he and my mom came to America, they decided to use his first name as our last name, no idea why. By the time I realized all these inconsistencies, they were both deceased. When I found this out, I decided to use both his names, (Ivy Amoakohene-Kyei). My father was a prince in his village in Agogo. I suspect that the word 'Amoako' is the name of his village.
'Hene' means King in Twi. So I believe that Amoakohene means king of Amoako. So basically my sisters and I should be using the last name of Kyei, but I chose to use both his first and last name as my last name. I hope this helps a bit.
