[Facts] Re: More Finnish Names- Satu?, Lassia?
in reply to a message by Satu
Veikko, Kauko and TellervoSatu, let's put our wise heads together... Veikko simply means "brother" (the more common word for this is "veli", but there are many diminutives of which Veikko is an example).Kauko does mean "far/faraway" and I believe it relates to an ancient Finnish legend, maybe the epic Kalevala.Tellervo is another ancient Finnish name. In Finnish legends, Tellervo was the wife of Tapio, the Ruler of the Forest, and thus a mighty figure that appears in many old stories. And Hilkka is also a Finnish word meaning bonnet, hood. Little Red Riding-Hood is Punahilkka (Red Hood) in Finnish, and the name Hilkka started to gain popularity at the time when the story was translated into Finnish.Hope this helps!Lass
