I know charity is a virtue, but a lot of people don't want charity, you know? :)
Some people also don't understand the concept beyond the basic "Here's my old stuff, enjoy." The first definition from m-w.com has nothing to do with the needy--in fact, it's this:
benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity
Only a misanthropist wouldn't want that. :)
