I think lots of people see it as dated [probably because of the abundance of little
Kimberly's running around in the 70s and 80s] and have therefore chosen not to use it. I used to despise it, but I've recently been considering it a bit more, and it's quite nice. I like that there are lots of nn's to choose from, though the one that's growing on me the quickest is
Kimmy.
As far as mn's go, I think it goes pretty well with any style of mn... classic, modern, trendy, etc.
