And if I am asking for opinions on
individual names, "can't get over the reindeer association" or "don't like the nerv in minerva" is totally valid, if annoying. But if I am saying something that requires a teensy bit of thinking such as "What do you think of these combos," "can't get over the reindeer association" is totally not relevant and totally annoying. I do not like the names
Spencer and
Hamilton, but when I am asked "Wdyt
John Spencer and
Jude Hamilton" I can say that I think the combos are good and solid. Obviously Diamante04's naming philosophy is different from mine.
If I respond to "Wdyt
Jude Hamilton" with "dislike
Hamilton because it's a surname and I don't think surnames should be used as given names," that is not relevant to her at all because she thinks it is okay to use
Hamilton. She is not asking about my philosophy and I am not telling her anything about her combo.
Furthermore, if I respond to the question "Wdyt
Spencer" and I say "I dislike it because it is a surname and I am against using surnames as given names," that is also completely unhelpful. Obviously she has considered that they are surnames and does not mind.
However, if I say something like "I do not like surnames as given names. However since you obv have no problem with it,
Spencer is a good handsome sound and very workable and very good in the combo etc" that is a ton more relevant.
So when people say "nms reminds me of the reindeer" it pisses me off a bit. Obviously I have thought about it and would like them to think about it for a second. Is there anything else about it they dislike? Because the reindeer thing doesn't bother me. Putting up something like "surname," "reindeer," or "vaguely resembles a creative spelling of another name" is like a big wall to actual, helpful opinions. It is like the person in question doesn't need to think about the name a teensy bit more just because they have a convenient blanket opinion already prepared. It's not that I want everyone to praise
Rudolf and
Minerva until the heavens open up and sing. I actually enjoy negative feedback a lot of times. I just want to know what they
think about them. That is:
think. Because I've
thought about them enough to post about them, and I like them.
It is mostly thoughtless knee-jerk reactions in response to careful questions that bugs me. That's why I included the
Octavia bit.
And, being a fan of conventionally ugly and unpopular names, I get a lot of really thoughtless and worthless responses. And I find it irritating. And I was trying to commiserate.
I hope this post clears things up a bit. I didn't mean to attack
Jaye, I thought her response was actually a lot better than the other two because it included a bit about her actual opinion of the name. I was snittier than I should have been because I am getting a bit tired of the extreme condemnation laid down by BTNers on any spelling or variation of a name that's not in the database. (Personally, the idea of Annakiya being an elaboration of
Annika doesn't make it any less valid than its being a relatively unfamiliar African name, but that's another discussion entirely.) I suppose I was subconsciously trying to include my opinion on that in the post also, which is why I responded to
Jaye I guess. Anyway my response to her was also directed to the two other responses that were already given.
Anyway yeah sorry guys! D: Sorry
Jaye!
