I agree, they're both great names. I'm fine with Sam as a nn for Samuel, not so fond of Joe, though. If I had a Joseph, I'd try to ensure that he was called Joseph. They are timeless. If I had to choose, I prefer Samuel to Joseph, so that's the combo I like more.
