It's possible, esp. among people who aren't as 'educated', so to speak. I have it on good authority from 2 nurses I work with that they talked mothers out of using the name MECONIUM after they heard it in the delivery room and thought it sounded "cute", spelling not necessarily withstanding. BTW, in case you don't know, meconium is a baby's first stool (black or green and tarry) which sometimes occurs before or during the birth, but often after. Not a pretty connotation, however you look at it. :b But if you don't KNOW what a word means--be it the word meconium or "anally"--then I can see how it might happen. And apparently it does happen...to the child's detriment. :(
