I'm not sure. When I was taking my class on 20th century germany I somehow encountered this name and fell a little in love with it, but as I repeated it to myself I couldn't really justify it. For one thing I felt like my love of the name was a little bit perverse and almost sexual (???) and for another there was no way I could say it in an American accent. So for me it is difficult to imagine it on a non-German. I ended up naming a character Werner; he was German and named after one of his uncles, which is why he had such an awkward dated name despite being like 16.

Since then I've sort of gone off it, enough to where it makes me want to not return to the story he was in. Meh.
