It is a cute little name, and needs saving from horrible associations by getting lots of use by good people. I think it's fine on its own -
Mellan is too melony for me, but there are some fun surname options, like Melhuish! Or
Melville. Or Mellor, or Melbourne, or even Melrose. Or, it would actually work pretty well as an unusual nn for
Michael.
I could combo these long versions but can't seem to come up with much for just
Mel.

Mel Wilbur?
Mel Stanley?
Mel Harold?
