In the Kingdom of Rossinest
The period after Queen Honora's death was a mournful one. Even after the official mourning period ended, many of the kingdom's citizens could be seen wearing a black ribbon in their braid or a black handkerchief tucked into their shirt pocket. But with war brewing at their borders, the Rossinestians and their Royal Family must put their grief aside and move forward to protect their country. King James made very quiet arrangements with one of Rossinest's traditional allies. The countries had been growing distant in recent years for various reasons, and with the threat of war looming, James and the Royal Advisers began to reconnect with the Royal Family of Sweetbourne. To solidify the burgeoning alliance for years to come, King Daniel suggested that his only daughter marry King James. Knowing that he had no acceptable heir, the grieving king proposed to the young woman. Both parties were hesitant, but recognized that the marriage was in the best interests for everyone involved.
Princess Mary is a lovely young lady. Though only 17 when she married James, she has accepted her new role as queen and stepmother with grace and dignity. Mary, who is known fondly as Molly, is kind and gentle, but very young. James is a little uncomfortable with her youth, especially since he has begun to notice gray hairs at his temples. He misses Honora deeply, and doesn't view Molly romantically. The couple are becoming a good team, running the country and raising the children, and though he knows he must beget a proper heir with his new wife, he is hesitant. The Royal Advisers made it very clear that the Queen should bear at least one of her own children to succeed to the throne, and shortly afterward, the young Queen was with child.
Princess Adeline is on the cusp of young womanhood herself, and she looks up to Molly. Quietly, however, she does not view her father's new wife as the true Queen of Rossinest or even as her own mother. Adeline misses her mother fiercely and though she looks her baby triplet siblings, she also resents them -- both for bringing about their mother's death and for making another marriage necessary. She wishes Charles was still the Heir Apparent and that her mother had never had the triplets and so would be alive and well and in love with her father.
Genevieve and Johanna miss their mother very much, but have taken to Molly quickly and love to play her and let her braid their hair. She dotes on the twin girls, buying them matching dresses and dolls. They are an adorable pair, and Johanna sings beautifully, while Genevieve accompanies her on the piano.
Charles is still a young boy, but the loss of his mother and the presence of a new stepmother has jarred him significantly. As a consequence, he has drawn closer and closer to his father, and has begun to show an interest in military training. With a war brewing, there are not many men to spare to train the young prince, but Charles' older cousin, Lionel, has agreed to start his training and take him on in a few years as a sort of page.
More than any of the older children, Molly has really become a mother to the triplets, Susannah, Julian, and Vincent. Though she is unable to nurse them, she changes their diapers, sings them lullabies, and is teaching them to walk and talk. James is moved by her obvious love for his three tragic babes, and he hopes that in time she will be a good mother to their future children and to his older children.
Baby Prince Arthur became the new Heir Apparent at his birth, which followed a relatively easy labor for his young mother. The older children took to their new half-brother quickly, and with his burnished gold hair and large blue eyes, it's not difficult to see why! He is lovely little baby and cries very little, and has just taken to smiling a sweet little smile at his mother and older brothers and sisters. James and Molly hope that he and the triplets will be very close, though James fears the divide that will likely form between Honora's children and Molly's children as they grow older. Adeline has found that her wariness of her new stepmother extends to her new half-brother as well. Though she loves him and knows that he is a baby brother just the same as Charles, Julian, or Vincent, she wishes that one of her mother's children would inherit the throne.
The enemy's threats have quieted in the face of the new Rossinest-Sweetbourne alliance, but James does not at all believe that the threat is gone...
