[Surname] Re: Bhuntes (Old English)
in reply to a message by Paul
I can see that you posted the same question in 2008, but with no answer. Sorry for the late response, but perhaps I may have the answer to your question. You said that Bhuntes is also spelt Bhutes, which gave me a big hint to this name/surname. Perhaps Bhuntes in Old English was originally áþrunten, meaning, "swollen", past part of áðrintan. Another spelling is áþrúten, without the "n", with the same meaning, and past part of áðrútan. This is the closest Old English word I've found similar to Bhuntes/Bhutes. Perhaps it's not Bhuntes/Brutes, but Bruntes/Brutes, similar with áþrunten/áþrúten. What I'm confused is the name Bhuntes itself. It is not a modern surname I'm certainly sure, but where did you get the information from? Do you know anyone who has the name Bhuntes/Bhutes? I think I need more information from you.If what I stated above is true, then that means that Bhuntes is probably not from a place name, but maybe from a nickname name, personal name, or others. Bhuntes can be a place name, but I have found no such in the U.K.
