Ash can came to my mind immediately. Where I grew up, we cooked and heated the house with coal and wood,which produced ashes, which had to be cleaned out of the stove and furnace, and put in the ash can, a metal bin where the ashes sat for a while, until you were sure there were no live coals in them to start a fire.
