There is a place to use the surname of a person one wants to honor, when the surname makes for a horribly unattractive personal name. That place is the middle name slot. Therefore, I don't excuse.

there are plenty of "horribly unattractive" names that have been regularly used as first names, though. It's all subjective. I happen to think the name Cleveland is horribly unattractive but if someone wanted to use it to honor Grover Cleveland who am I to say Cleveland should stay out of sight in the middle? Maybe they felt that Spurgeon wouldn't be prominent enough, and therefore wouldn't convey their want to honor, if they had relegated it to the middle. Maybe they planned to call him Spurgeon but once he arrived they couldn't part with Quincy

It's my opinion I was asked for and was giving, so I get to decide what's horribly unattractive and what should stay in the middle. For the purpose of my answer only.

of course you get to decide what constitutes a horribly unattractive name, to you. I just find it curious that you would rebut someone else's acceptance of it, or else, reply to someone else's reply as such. I don't see where Pink Princess asked for your opinion...

Actually, Pink Princess stated a fact -- He is named for Charles Spurgeon, a preacher who still makes an impact to this day. -- and based her opinion on this fact. I was unaware of this fact when I made my answer, as I rarely read the responses of others before posting my own. So what I was doing was stating that knowledge of this fact has slightly modified my opinion (it would be okay as a middle name) but not fundamentally changed it (but still not as a first.) It was a statement of how knowledge of the fact has influenced or not influenced my opinion, not a rebuttal of her opinion.
If I'd happened to read her response before making my own and included this in my original response, I don't think you would have had a problem with it yet it still would have been based upon the knowledge I gained by reading Pink Princess' post.

I just don't know. A large reason why the name Cleveland baffles me

He was the only President born in New Jersey. Reason enough for me!
